Chaos is regarded as a nonlinear phenomenon in general. However, in this talk, we will investigate linear translation operators on locally compact groups, and give the sufficient and necessary condition for such operators to be chaotic. In particular, we show that the density of periodic points of a weighted translation impliesautomatically hypercyclicity, which is one of the ingredients for a chaotic dynamic system. We also characterize topologically mixing translation operators.
