講題:Measurements of turbulent mixing in the surrounding waters of Taiwan
摘要:
In this study, dissipation rates of kinetic energy and temperature variances in the surrounding waters of Taiwan were measured directly by a turbulence module (made by Rockland Scientific) which was fastened with a CTD/Lowered ADCP cage and lowered to depths in a nominal speed of 0.5-0.8 m/s. The turbulence module is a self-contained unit consisting of shear probes, thermistors and micro-conductivity probes with a sampling rate of 512 Hz. Turbulent diffusivities calculated from the dissipation rates are then compared with those estimated by the indirect methods of parameterization and Thorpe displacement. We have surveyed four experimental sites, i.e., Peng-hu Channel, Kaoping Submarine Canyon, Luzon Strait, and the Kuroshio vicinity region southeast of Taiwan. Our results indicate that at these four sites the turbulence characteristics show quite different values and vertical distribution. The Peng-hu Channel is characterized by very strong turbulent mixing in the bottom boundary layer of about 50 m thick. The Kaoping Submarine Canyon, with a marked two-layer system and semi-diurnal internal tides, also shows strong turbulence. Along the 21 N transect in the Luzon Strait, the turbulent diffusivities in the North SCS is significantly stronger than those in the Pacific side.
